NoteFrames Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 29, 2026. This policy explains how NoteFrames handles data in the current local-first Chrome extension release.

What NoteFrames Does

NoteFrames lets you capture timestamped notes while watching YouTube videos, review and search saved notes locally, jump back to saved timestamps, export readable Markdown, and create or restore local JSON backups.

Information Handled Locally

The extension handles only the information needed for its note-taking features:

  • User-entered note text.
  • YouTube video IDs.
  • Video titles and thumbnails used to identify saved notes.
  • Note timestamps and note creation times.
  • Library order and local display state.
  • Local settings such as export format and timestamp offset.
  • Backup metadata when you create or restore a JSON backup.

This information is used to provide local note capture, local review and search, timestamp navigation, Markdown export, and JSON backup or restore.

Storage, Exports, and Backups

Notes and settings are stored locally in the current Chrome profile using chrome.storage.local. Markdown exports and JSON backups are created locally only when you request them. Restoring a JSON backup reads a file you choose, validates it locally, and replaces stored notes and relevant settings only after your confirmation.

If you uninstall the extension or delete the Chrome profile without a JSON backup, locally stored notes can be permanently removed.

No External Transmission

The NoteFrames extension does not send notes, video metadata, analytics, telemetry, crash reports, identifiers, or browsing history to NoteFrames servers or third-party servers.

NoteFrames does not sell, rent, share, or transfer extension data for advertising, profiling, data broker activity, creditworthiness decisions, analytics, or unrelated purposes.

What Is Not Included

The current release does not include accounts, login, cloud sync, hosted backup, payment processing, ads, affiliate tracking, Notion integration, AI processing, remote note processing, or remote search services.

Permissions

  • storage: stores notes, saved video metadata, library order, and settings locally in the current Chrome profile.
  • activeTab: supports user-initiated navigation from the extension popup back to the active YouTube video or a saved timestamp.
  • scripting: supports the packaged note-taking panel on YouTube watch pages, including videos opened through YouTube in-page navigation.

The packaged content script is limited to https://www.youtube.com/*. The note panel mounts only on standard YouTube watch pages.

Remote Code

NoteFrames does not load or execute remote code. Extension code is packaged with the release build.

Limited Use

NoteFrames uses handled data only to provide and improve its single purpose: local-first timestamped notes for YouTube videos. This use follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Feedback and Support

If you choose to send feedback through an external form or support channel, submit only the information you want to include in that message. The extension does not automatically attach private notes to feedback.

Changes to This Policy

This policy will be updated if NoteFrames adds features that change how data is handled, such as accounts, sync, hosted backup, third-party integrations, AI features, analytics, telemetry, broader site access, new permissions, or external network calls.
